The Importance of Myopia Control
Myopia affects around 40% of the United States population, with 1 in 4 parents having a child with myopia.
Your child’s eyes play an essential role in how they see and interact with the environment around them. When their vision is affected, so is their learning and development.
To help ensure they are seeing their best for success in and outside of the classroom, a comprehensive eye exam with your trusted optometrist can help preserve the future of their vision.
What Is Myopia?
Myopia, also referred to as nearsightedness, occurs when the eye grows too long, or the cornea has too much curvature, resulting in light not being able to focus correctly on the back of the eye and blurred distance vision.
Myopia is often detected in childhood as the eyeball continues to grow and develop and stabilizes around age 20. If you notice your child complaining about headaches, excessively squinting, or having trouble reading the board at school, it’s time to visit your eye doctor.
Detecting and managing myopia early is important in minimizing the risk of developing sight-threatening conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal detachment. Eye Sea Davis Optometry is proud to offer vision-correcting solutions for your child.
Managing Myopia
With the increasing prevalence of myopia worldwide, Eye Sea Davis Optometry is excited to be part of the solution. We’ll assess your child’s eyes to determine their level of myopia and what solution will effectively slow its progression. Our team is happy to discuss the potential for eyeglasses, contact lenses, or refractive surgery.
MiSight 1-Day Contact Lenses
MiSight 1-day contact lenses by CooperVision are single-use, easy-to-fit lenses to help slow the progression of myopia in children as young as 8 years old.
MiSight 1-day lenses use ActivControl Technology to slow the elongation of the eye while simultaneously correcting the refractive error. To do this, the contact lenses have 2 alternating treatment zones—a myopic defocus zone and a correction zone.
Discover if MiSight 1-day contact lenses are right for your child.
Ortho-K/CRT (Corneal Refractive Therapy)
Orthokeratology, also known as ortho-k, are rigid gas-permeable contact lenses worn overnight to shape your child’s cornea, helping to reduce their dependence on glasses and contact lenses during the day.
Ortho-k lenses may be a beneficial option for children experiencing mild to moderate myopia. These lenses flatten the cornea, reducing the eye’s refractive power, helping to slow myopia progression.
Ortho-k lenses are custom-made for each individual’s eye shape and prescription.
