How to Handle an Eye Emergency

It’s important to try and stay as composed and calm as possible. You should visit us or an emergency room right away to avoid further damage to your eye. Even seemingly insignificant injuries can affect your vision. 

Depending on the emergency you’re experiencing, there are a few things you can do: 

• Blink to attempt to remove any debris in your eye
• Flush your eyes with cool water (if experiencing a chemical splash)
• Wash your hands before making any contact with your eye area

It can feel like you need to place pressure on the eye or remove a stuck object, but this isn’t a good idea. Never attempt to rub or apply pressure to the eye, try to remove a foreign object stuck in the eye, or administer medications or eye drops.
