Identifying the Source of Your Symptoms
Dry eye is a complex condition with multiple factors affecting its development. Treating this condition can be more complicated than it may seem. It’s helpful to figure out what’s causing your symptoms before treating them.
Visit Eye Sea Davis Optometry, and we can learn more about your dry eye situation. We’re here to determine the source of your symptoms.
What Is Dry Eye Disease?
Dry eye disease occurs when your tears cannot adequately lubricate your eyes. The common causes of this condition are not producing enough tears or creating poor quality tears, leading to faster evaporation.
These issues arise from complications with your tear film—3 layers (mucus, water, and oil) that help keep your eyes protected and moist. The mucus layer of the tear film keeps tears fastened to your eye’s surface, the water level keeps the eye hydrated and free of bacteria, and the oily layer helps prevent tears from evaporating too quickly.
When issues arise in the tear film, your eyes can experience several irritating symptoms, including:
- A stinging, burning, scratching sensation
- Blurry vision
- Eye fatigue
- Eye redness
- Foreign object sensation
- Light sensitivity
- Stringy mucus in or around the eyes
- Watery eyes
Diagnosing Dry Eye Disease
We take a comprehensive approach when diagnosing dry eyes. Our team uses a variety of tests during your eye exam to determine the root cause of your symptoms.
We can examine your eyes in detail with diagnostic technology, measure your tear volume, assess the quality of your tears, or determine how much water you produce for your tears. After understanding your dry eye situation, we can recommend a treatment plan to help relieve your symptoms.
